Friday 14th October was a night of celebration for over 80 Blue Mountains businesses celebrating success at the Fairmont Resort, Leura and anxiously awaiting the results of the Business Awards.

With 260 people in the room, Candy Stripe Circus kicked the night off with an aerial act followed by the announcement of award winners. MC, Katherine Hawes entertained the audience and kept the evening moving through the 20 awards presentations and The Billies, a group of Blaxland High boys, received huge applause after they did a medley of 60's & 70's songs following dessert.

The Mountain Heritage Hotel & Spa Retreat took out the Harry Hammon Business of the Year Award and nineteen other businesses received wins or highly commended awards. For the full list see below.

The Blue Mountains Youth Council are engaged in a project alongside Platform Youth Services which aims to deliver Christmas presents to homeless and at-risk youth in our community. The project is a Community Christmas Giving Tree that will be placed within the Blue Mountains Theatre and Community Hub at Springwood from mid-November to late-December. We intend to collect any donations here and place them underneath the tree.

The Hon. John Barilaro MP, the Minister for Small Business, Skills and Regional Development, walked the streets of Katoomba last Friday at the invitation of the Blue Mountains Regional Business Chamber. The Minister's walking tour started at the Carrington Hotel followed by the World Heritage Interpretive display at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre before he went to a range of Katoomba Street businesses to discuss the issues facing small business on the main street. Small business owners were aware that the Minister was across the general issues with the decline in the retail sector but they were not backward in alerting the Minister to local issues.

Whilst touring Office Choice on Katoomba Street The Hon. John Barilaro MP, the Minister for Small Business, Skills and Regional Development, was informed about the partnership between the Blue Mountains Regional Business Chamber and 3 Sisters.TV to produce the new online television program - ON TOPIC. The Executive General Manager of The Chamber, Julie Bargenquast said that "The Minister praised this partnership initiative as the type of digital media exposure of local business issues as being exactly what was needed to bring the local context to the conversation on National and International issues facing small business" and he went on to congratulate both partners on their strategic foresight. When The Chamber went on to explain that the first two pilot programs were being funded by major sponsor Fitzgerald Swan, a Real Estate Agency, the Minister was impressed that the business sector on the Mountain were engaging with the Chamber to progress the issues facing small business.

At a gala Awards presentation night on Friday 17th October, winners of the Blue Mountains Business Awards were announced. MC, Jack Black entertained us with some magic tricks, the Blue Mountains Musical Society gave us a preview of their upcoming muysical, Cats, and the Dancing Waiters surprised everyone after mains with a hip hop dance performance on stage. Cello and guitar duo, Gossamer Tide played gentle background music as people enetered the room and during meals.

Despite a day of tragic loss and chaos during the day, there was still a turnout of around 200 business people to the 2013 Blue Mountains Business Awards on Friday night. People wanted to focus on something positive after such a horrific day and the Fairmont Resort put on a wonderful meal to celebrate Excellence in Business. MC, James Valentine, broadcaster on the afternoon show at radio 702 ABC Sydney, moved the evening along with his wit and humour and Strings on Fire entertained with their clever violin playing and balancing acts. At the end of the evening The Starr Sisters sang easy swing while business people danced the night to an end.

The Blue Mountains community receives the support of many businesses whose contribution has a profound effect on our local community. Each year, the Blue Mountains Business Awards recognize the outstanding achievements of the most benevolent business in the region with a Community Contribution award.

Since 2009, the winning business has been Bygone Beautys antique emporium and tea rooms of Leura. Owner Maurice Cooper OAM, says “when my partner, Kerry McKenzie and I started in business over 40 years ago, we made a commitment that we would assist the community wherever we saw the need and were able to do so.”

'The Business Sentiment Survey will be an annual market research exercise amongst our Members, allowing us to assess and track key business issues and sentiment amongst Blue Mountains businesses. This is the first survey of its kind for the region and it will enable BIZNET to apply the findings for future strategy and planning', said BIZNET Board Director and Survey coordinator, Dianne Davis.

Some 66 businesses, covering a wide range of industry sectors, participated in the Survey (representing over 25% of BIZNET membership).

Biznet, the Regional Chamber of Commerce for the Blue Mountains, will kick off the 2012 Blue Mountains Business awards on July 18 and it seemed timely to reflect on where last year’s winners are now. Two of our top businesses, iKOU in Leura and Accounting and Taxation Advantage in Glenbrook have entered and are in the finals of the Telstra Awards. Biznet President, Dave Garner, commented, “It shows the high calibre of businesses we have here in the Blue Mountains and we are very proud that these businesses have gone on to excel in other awards programs.”

Almost 60 local businesses were showcased at the Regional Business Expo presented by Biznet, the Regional Chamber of Commerce for the Blue Mountains at the Springwood Civic Centre on May 9. Executive Officer, Heather Shepherd said, There was a constant crowd throughout the day and many interested people discovering whats available in our region. Its great to give local businesses the chance to show what is available in our own backyard.

Roll up! roll up! to the 4th Regional Blue Mountains Business Expo on Wednesday May 9, 2012. Springwood Civic Centre will be packed with local businesses from 11am to 6pm, highlighting the fantastic products and services on offer in our region. Mayor, Clr Daniel Myles will officially open the expo at 1pm before a short circus performance by Dan Druff. Great coffee and food are available as you mingle and meet with businesses and friends throughout the day.
